At Florence, we’re proud to see our care professionals making a difference in peoples’ lives every single day. This August’s Florence Star Award goes to Godswill, who was nominated for his “amazing” work by a Florence care home, who see him as part of their permanent team.
A nurse of five years, Godswill moved from Nigeria to the UK in 2021 and has been booking shifts with Florence for over a year. We asked him more about his journey into care, what he likes about our app and what he wishes everyone knew about nursing…
Tell us a little bit about your journey into nursing?
My path to healthcare has been pretty straightforward. As far back as I can remember, I’ve never considered doing anything other than healthcare. It was an easy choice when the opportunity presented itself.
I got my Bachelor’s degree in Nursing Science in 2018 and then completed an internship at Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital in West Africa. I served the Nigerian state for a year through the NYSC program, where I was a major frontliner during the height of Covid.
I moved to the UK in the winter of 2021 and began working as a staff nurse in a cardiac ward. Currently, I work as an elderly care staff nurse.
What’s your favourite thing about being a nurse?
There’s a broad public confidence in the nursing profession, and the favourite part of my job is knowing that the care I provide helps form that perception.
Virginia Henderson’s definition of the role of the nurse says it all: “The unique function of the nurse is to assist the individual, sick or well, in the performance of those activities contributing to health or its recovery (or to peaceful death) that he would perform unaided if he had the necessary strength, will or knowledge.”
What do you like most about working with Florence?
Florence cares. The staff are easily accessible and provide support whenever you need it.
Are there any Florence app features you find extra useful? If so, what are they?
I find the column that describes the home offering a shift extremely useful.
It gives you a heads-up on what type of tasks to expect and what skills are needed for the job.
Any advice for care professionals thinking about signing up?
Don’t think too much about it. Just join – you won’t regret it.
What’s the one thing you wish everyone knew about your role?
Nursing isn’t just about administering medications or monitoring vitals; it’s a mentally demanding job.
A lot of mental calculations and gymnastics go into completing a nursing shift. This is because nursing focuses on person-centred care, and no two individuals are the same. Critical thinking is essential to providing high-quality care to each patient.
Thank you, Godswill, for your commitment to quality care – we’re so happy to have you as part of our community.
